    • Mali's military government on Tuesday dissolved the west African country's political parties, according to a presidency decree, the latest attempt to clamp down on the opposition since the junta seized power. In an op-ed on Monday, former justice minister Mamadou Ismaila Konate said the junta was attempting "to systematically demolish political countervailing powers" in Mali.

Mali's military junta has dissolved all political parties and associations, a move that has been criticized by the opposition as a step towards dictatorship. This decision, announced on state television, comes ahead of a national dialogue intended to chart the country's future, raising concerns about the junta's commitment to a democratic transition. The dissolution affects over 100 political parties and numerous associations, effectively silencing opposition voices and potentially undermining the upcoming dialogue's credibility. The junta's actions have drawn condemnation from both domestic and international observers, who fear this could lead to further instability in the already troubled region.
