  • Now that India and Pakistan have agreed to a ceasefire after days of missile and drone strikes, there are certain players in the two countries that can use the crisis to bolster their domestic support.

The Kashmir conflict significantly influences the political landscapes of both India and Pakistan, shaping their domestic and foreign policies. In India, the BJP uses the Kashmir issue to bolster its nationalist agenda, often portraying Pakistan as an adversary to rally domestic support, especially during elections. The revocation of Article 370 in 2019, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, was a pivotal move by the BJP to assert control and has been a point of contention both domestically and internationally. In Pakistan, the Kashmir issue is central to its national identity and foreign policy, with successive governments using it to maintain military influence and to garner international sympathy and support. The ongoing tension over Kashmir not only fuels military standoffs but also impacts the socio-economic conditions of the region, perpetuating a cycle of conflict and political maneuvering.
