While supporters say it will help struggling rural pharmacies, opponents say it drives up costs for Iowans by tens of millions a year.
The Iowa House has passed a bill aimed at increasing transparency in prescription drug pricing, which is now headed to Governor Kim Reynolds' desk for approval. The legislation, Senate File 2372, mandates that pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) disclose more information about their pricing and practices, including the amount of rebates they receive from drug manufacturers. This move is intended to help lower drug costs for consumers by shedding light on the often opaque dealings between PBMs, drug makers, and insurers. The bill received bipartisan support, though some Democrats expressed concerns that it does not go far enough in regulating PBMs. If signed into law, Iowa would join a growing number of states taking action to address the high cost of prescription drugs.
