Maplewood landed on the Trump administration's list of sanctuary cities that are allegedly "defying federal immigration law."

The U.S. Department of Justice has included Maplewood, New Jersey, on a list of sanctuary cities, alleging non-compliance with federal immigration laws, specifically the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996. This designation comes after Maplewood passed a resolution in 2017 affirming its sanctuary status, which the DOJ claims restricts local law enforcement from cooperating with federal immigration authorities. The DOJ has demanded that Maplewood provide documentation proving compliance with federal law, threatening to withhold certain federal grants if the township does not comply. Maplewood officials have responded by asserting that their policies align with federal law and that they will continue to protect the rights of all residents, regardless of immigration status.
