Nationalist opposition candidate Karol Nawrocki narrowly won Poland's presidential election, results showed on Monday, delivering a major blow to the centrist government's efforts to cement Warsaw's pro-European orientation.

In a significant political development in Poland, nationalist Slawomir Cenckiewicz was defeated by another nationalist, Slawomir Nawrocki, in the race for the presidency of the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), marking a setback for the pro-EU government led by Donald Tusk. Nawrocki, who secured 36 votes against Cenckiewicz's 28, is known for his controversial views, including denying the role of Poles in the Jedwabne pogrom during World War II. This election outcome is seen as a blow to Tusk's efforts to steer Poland towards a more pro-European stance and away from the nationalist policies of the previous Law and Justice (PiS) government. The IPN, responsible for investigating and prosecuting crimes against the Polish nation, remains a key battleground in Poland's ongoing political and cultural wars.
