What to know about the Dutch government in turmoil and what happens next

The government, with limited powers, now has to lead the country for months before new elections and during what could again be protracted talks to cobble together a new coalition in the fragmented Dutch political landscape after the vote.
The Dutch government, led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte, collapsed due to a failure to reach an agreement on migration policies, marking the end of his fourth coalition government. The disagreement centered around asylum policies, with Rutte's conservative VVD party pushing for stricter measures, including a two-year waiting period for family reunification, which was opposed by coalition partners D66 and the Christian Union. Following the collapse, Rutte tendered his resignation to King Willem-Alexander, and the country is now headed towards a general election in November. In the interim, Rutte's government will continue as a caretaker administration, managing daily affairs without initiating new policies. This political upheaval comes amidst other challenges for the Netherlands, including housing shortages and a nitrogen emissions crisis affecting the farming sector.
