At 37 years old, Jacinda Ardern was the world's youngest female head of government when she became prime minister of New Zealand. She was also just the second to give birth while in office and led her nation through crises, including a devastating mass shooting and the pandemic. Ardern joined Amna Nawaz to discuss her memoir, "A Different Kind of Power," and the documentary, "Prime Minister."

In an interview with PBS NewsHour, former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern discussed her new memoir, "A Different Kind of Power," and her approach to leadership, emphasizing the importance of empathy in politics. Ardern, who stepped down in January 2023, reflected on her time in office, particularly her handling of the 2019 Christchurch mosque shootings and the global COVID-19 pandemic. She highlighted how her government's compassionate response to these crises, including swift gun law reforms and a focus on public health, resonated with the public. Ardern also addressed the challenges of maintaining empathy in a political environment often characterized by division and polarization, advocating for a leadership style that prioritizes kindness and understanding.
