Supreme Court shuts down Mexico's lawsuit against American gunmakers | CNN Politics

The Supreme Court on Thursday tossed out a lawsuit from the Mexican government that alleged American gun manufacturers should be held responsible for cartel violence on the Southwest border, a decision that shields the companies from a suit that had claimed billions in damages.

The Supreme Court has ruled in favor of Smith & Wesson in a lawsuit brought by the Mexican government, which accused the gun manufacturer of contributing to gun violence in Mexico through negligent business practices. The court's decision, with a 6-3 majority, upheld the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA), which shields gun manufacturers from liability for crimes committed with their products. Justice Clarence Thomas, writing for the majority, argued that the PLCAA preempts such lawsuits, emphasizing that Congress intended to protect the firearms industry from what it saw as frivolous litigation. The dissent, led by Justice Sonia Sotomayor, argued that the ruling undermines efforts to hold gun manufacturers accountable for their role in the illegal arms trade. This decision is seen as a significant victory for the gun industry and a setback for gun control advocates.
