The Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Act is set to be implemented despite opposition, as confirmed by South Africa's Basic Education Minister, Siviwe Gwarube. The Act, which has stirred controversy, aims to make several changes to the education system, including making Grade R the new compulsory school-starting age, criminalizing parents who fail to ensure their children attend school, and giving the department more control over language and curriculum policies in schools. Despite the backlash, particularly from the Afrikaans community and some political parties, Minister Gwarube has expressed her determination to see the Act through, emphasizing her commitment to her role in the government. She insists that the changes are necessary for the improvement of the education system, and she is prepared to face any political consequences to ensure the Act's implementation.
