Two former high-ranking Syrian intelligence officials have been charged with war crimes for allegedly torturing Americans and other civilians who were deemed enemies by the Syrian government and held in a military prison,

The U.S. Department of Justice has filed war crimes charges against four high-ranking Syrian officials, including Ali Mamlouk, Jamil Hassan, and Abdel Salam Mahmoud, for their alleged involvement in the torture and murder of a U.S. citizen, Majd Kamalmaz, in 2017. Kamalmaz, a psychotherapist, was detained by Syrian Air Force Intelligence while visiting family in Damascus. The charges, which include torture, conspiracy to commit torture, and conspiracy to commit war crimes, mark a significant legal action against Syrian government officials. This move is part of a broader effort by the U.S. to hold Syrian regime members accountable for human rights abuses during the ongoing civil conflict. The case was unsealed in the Eastern District of Virginia, highlighting the international scope of the legal proceedings.
