Whitehall departments have been ordered to submit their spending plans, as the chancellor said she was determined to wield an "iron fist against waste".

Rachel Reeves, the shadow chancellor, has announced that if Labour wins the next general election, government departments will be required to identify savings of at least 5% to address what she describes as "wasteful spending." This initiative aims to tackle the inefficiency and poor value for money in public spending, which Reeves attributes to 13 years of Conservative governance. She highlighted examples like the £140m spent on the failed Rwanda asylum policy and the £2.3bn wasted on unusable PPE. Reeves emphasized that these savings would not involve cutting public services but rather improving efficiency and effectiveness in government operations. This policy is part of Labour's broader strategy to demonstrate fiscal responsibility and redirect funds towards more productive uses, such as economic growth and public service improvements.
