Polish EU presidency to focus on energy, defence and economic security

  • With Trump's arrival in the US White House, a new EU Commission and the ongoing war in Ukraine, security in all its possible dimensions will be the main priority of the next rotating EU presidency, said Poland's Ambassador Agnieszka Bartol.

The Polish EU Presidency, set to begin in January 2025, will prioritize energy, defense, and economic security, according to Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk. During a meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, Tusk emphasized the need for a stronger European defense policy, particularly in light of the ongoing war in Ukraine. He advocated for increased defense spending and the development of a European air defense system. Additionally, Tusk highlighted the importance of economic security, suggesting that the EU should focus on reducing dependencies in critical sectors like energy and raw materials. The discussions also touched on the need for a more robust European response to global challenges, including support for Ukraine and addressing migration issues.
