  • SYDNEY (Reuters) -Tongan Prime Minister Siaosi Sovaleni has resigned "for the good of the country and moving Tonga forward", the Pacific Island nation's parliament said on Monday. Media reported the resignation in parliament shortly before midday came ahead of a motion for a vote of no confidence expected to be put to the assembly.

Tonga's Prime Minister, Hu'akavameiliku Siaosi Sovaleni, resigned on March 1, 2024, just before a no-confidence vote was scheduled to take place in the Tongan Parliament. The motion of no confidence was initiated by opposition leader 'Akilisi Pohiva, citing issues with governance and economic management. Despite Sovaleni's resignation, the government has stated that it remains stable, with Deputy Prime Minister Samiu Vaipulu expected to take over temporarily until a new prime minister is elected. The political upheaval comes at a time when Tonga is facing economic challenges post the global health crisis, and the government's handling of recovery efforts has been under scrutiny.
