  • French Prime Minister Michel Barnier is ousted after losing a no-confidence vote at the National Assembly - in a result that sees his government collapse.

The French government led by Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne collapsed after losing a no-confidence vote in the National Assembly. The vote was triggered by Borne's use of Article 49.3 of the French Constitution to push through a controversial pension reform without a parliamentary vote, raising the retirement age from 62 to 64. Despite the opposition's attempt to oust the government, the no-confidence motion fell short by nine votes, with 278 votes in favor out of the 287 needed. This political turmoil has led to widespread protests and strikes across France, with significant public unrest over the pension changes. President Emmanuel Macron, who has been pushing for this reform, now faces a decision on whether to reappoint Borne or choose a new prime minister, amidst ongoing national debate and division over the pension system overhaul.
