Romania's pro-Western parties agree to form a majority government after political turmoil
Published on 2024-12-11 08:41:04 - MSN
- Romania's pro-European parties agreed Wednesday to form a majority government made up of groupings that were traditionally on opposite sides and shutting out far-right nationalists who made significant gains in the election on Dec.
Romania's political landscape has stabilized as the pro-Western parties, the Social Democrats (PSD) and the Liberals (PNL), have agreed to form a coalition government following a period of political turmoil. This decision came after the resignation of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, who stepped down to facilitate the coalition's formation. The new government will be led by Nicolae Ciuca, the current Senate president, who will serve as Prime Minister. This move aims to ensure continuity in Romania's pro-Western policies, particularly in its support for Ukraine and its alignment with European Union and NATO objectives. The agreement ends weeks of uncertainty and is seen as a step towards political stability in Romania, with the coalition expected to command a strong majority in parliament.
