NC Republicans pass law shifting government power, overriding Cooper's veto
- North Carolina lawmakers approved a wide-ranging bill to shift executive power in state government on Wednesday, cementing a Republican override of Gov. Roy Cooper's veto a month before new elected officials are sworn in.
The North Carolina General Assembly, dominated by Republicans, passed a law on October 10, 2023, that shifts the authority to appoint members of election boards from the governor to the legislature. This change, enacted through Senate Bill 747, also known as "No Partisan Advantage in Elections," gives the legislature the power to appoint members to both the State Board of Elections and county election boards. Previously, these appointments were made by the governor, with equal representation from both major political parties. The new law has raised concerns among Democrats and voting rights advocates who fear it could lead to partisan manipulation of election processes, potentially affecting the integrity of elections. The bill was passed with a veto-proof majority, indicating that it could become law despite any potential veto from Democratic Governor Roy Cooper.
