  • Lawyer Suyianka Lempaa now wants the Kenyan government compelled to explain the criteria used in settling on Raila Odinga as the cuntry's candidate for AUC.

A Kenyan lawyer named Adrian Kamotho Njenga has filed a lawsuit in the High Court to prevent former Prime Minister Raila Odinga from using public funds for his campaign for the African Union Commission (AUC) chairperson position. Njenga argues that Odinga's campaign should not be financed by Kenyan taxpayers, as it is not a national duty but a personal ambition. He contends that such funding would be unconstitutional and an abuse of office, especially since Odinga has not resigned from his position as the leader of Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party. The petition seeks to block any financial support from the Kenyan government for Odinga's campaign, highlighting that the campaign should be funded by the African Union or through private means. The case has been marked as urgent, with a hearing scheduled for March 1, 2024.
