Feds collected records of congressional staff, reporters in Trump-era leak probes
- The Justice Department failed to follow internal policy and ignored protections when seeking records from members of Congress, dozens of congressional staffers and members of the media, a watchdog found.
The article from MSN discusses how during the Trump administration, the Justice Department under Attorney General Jeff Sessions secretly obtained records of congressional staff members and journalists as part of leak investigations. This included phone records, emails, and text messages from at least two House Intelligence Committee staffers and their families, as well as from journalists at CNN, the Washington Post, and the New York Times. These actions were part of efforts to identify sources of leaks regarding contacts between Trump associates and Russia. The investigations, which took place in 2017 and 2018, were not disclosed to those whose records were seized until much later, raising significant concerns about privacy and press freedom. The article notes that while such actions are not illegal, they are highly unusual and have sparked debate over the balance between national security and individual rights.
