Officers and crew aboard a French nuclear submarine have accidentally blown their cover as well as their location and schedule by recording their runs and jogs on a fitness app.

The fitness app Strava has inadvertently caused a significant security breach involving French nuclear submarines. According to a report by French newspaper Le Monde, the app's global heat map feature, which displays user activity data, revealed the locations and movements of French submariners, including those stationed at sensitive military bases like the Île Longue nuclear submarine base. This breach exposed the routines and potential security protocols of these submariners, as their exercise patterns were tracked and made public. The issue came to light when it was noticed that the heat map showed activity in areas where no civilian should be, highlighting the vulnerability of using such apps in secure environments. Following the discovery, the French Navy has taken steps to address the security implications, including advising personnel on the use of location-sharing apps.
