The incoming Trump administration, prior to taking office, requested that White House National Security Council (NSC) staff provide details about their work, including their involvement in projects related to Russia, Ukraine, and other sensitive policy areas. This inquiry was part of a broader effort to assess the loyalty and alignment of NSC civil servants with the new administration's policies. The requests were made through a questionnaire distributed by the Trump transition team, asking staff to list their current projects, any work related to Russia or Ukraine, and their views on these matters. This move raised concerns among some NSC employees about potential political interference in national security operations, as well as fears of a purge or reassignment based on perceived political alignment rather than professional merit. The transition team's actions were seen by some as an unusual and potentially inappropriate vetting process for career civil servants, traditionally insulated from such political litmus tests.
