Mediators make final push for Gaza truce deal
- Mediators were making a final push Wednesday to seal a Gaza truce and hostage release deal, after a Qatari official involved in the talks expressed hope an agreement could be reached "very soon". Qatar's foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said Tuesday that negotiations were in their "final stages" and mediators were hopeful they would lead "very soon to an agreement".
Mediators from Egypt, Qatar, and the U.S. are intensifying efforts to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in Gaza, aiming to halt the ongoing conflict that has persisted for over seven months. The proposed deal includes a 40-day ceasefire, during which Hamas would release civilian hostages, followed by negotiations for the release of soldiers and the return of deceased hostages' bodies. Despite these efforts, significant obstacles remain, including Hamas's demand for a permanent ceasefire and Israeli withdrawal, which Israel has rejected, insisting on the release of all hostages and the defeat of Hamas. The urgency of the situation is underscored by the dire humanitarian conditions in Gaza, with widespread displacement and critical shortages of essentials like food, water, and medical supplies.
