Greek PM nominates parliament speaker for presidential post
- Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis nominated parliament speaker Constantine Tassoulas from his centre-right New Democracy party for the Greek presidency on Wednesday. President Katerina Sakellaropoulou's five-year term expires in March and an initial parliamentary vote on the largely ceremonial post is expected on Jan.
Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has nominated the current Parliament Speaker, Konstantinos Tasoulas, for the position of President of Greece. This nomination comes as the term of the incumbent President, Katerina Sakellaropoulou, is set to end in March 2025. Tasoulas, who has been a prominent figure in Greek politics, previously served as the Minister of Culture and Sports and has been a member of the New Democracy party, which Mitsotakis leads. His nomination reflects Mitsotakis's strategy to maintain continuity and stability within the government, especially as Greece navigates through economic recovery and political reforms. The nomination process will now move to the Greek Parliament, where a vote will determine if Tasoulas will succeed Sakellaropoulou.
