THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The abrogation of Article 370 cannot be viewed in isolation but as part of a series of processes undermining democracy and federalism, said Mohamad Yousuf Tarigami, CPI(M) MLA from Jammu and Kashmir.
CPI(M) leader Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami has strongly criticized the abrogation of Article 370, which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, calling it an "assault on democracy." Speaking at a seminar in New Delhi, Tarigami argued that the decision, made on August 5, 2019, was not only unconstitutional but also undermined the federal structure of India. He highlighted that the move was executed without the consent of the people of Jammu and Kashmir, bypassing democratic norms and processes. Tarigami also pointed out the subsequent bifurcation of the state into two Union Territories, which he believes has led to increased alienation and a sense of disenfranchisement among the local population. He emphasized the need for dialogue and restoration of statehood to address the ongoing issues in the region.
