  • American politics has ended, at least temporarily. The out-party has to do something to try to reverse that, no? Even if that something risks making it toxic to swing voters.

The article "The End of Politics" by David Brooks, published on Yahoo News, discusses the transformation of American politics from a system based on compromise and negotiation to one dominated by cultural and identity politics. Brooks argues that traditional political parties, which once focused on policy and governance, are now overshadowed by movements driven by cultural grievances and identity. He highlights how this shift has led to a decline in the art of political compromise, as both the left and the right increasingly view politics through the lens of moral and cultural battles rather than practical governance. This change, according to Brooks, has resulted in a more polarized and less functional political environment where the focus is less on solving problems and more on cultural signaling and identity affirmation. He suggests that this trend could potentially lead to the end of politics as traditionally understood, where the negotiation of differing interests for the common good is replaced by a zero-sum game of cultural dominance.
