  • The House of Representatives passed a spending bill Tuesday to fund the government through the end of September and avert a government shutdown at the end of the week. The bill now heads to the Senate.

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a temporary spending bill on September 30, 2023, to prevent a government shutdown, extending federal funding for 45 days. This bill, which was passed with a vote of 335-91, was a bipartisan effort led by Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who managed to garner support from both Democrats and Republicans. The legislation notably did not include aid for Ukraine, a contentious issue among some GOP members, but it did increase federal disaster assistance by $16 billion, as requested by the White House. The bill now moves to the Senate, where it is expected to pass, and President Joe Biden has indicated he will sign it into law. This action was critical as it came just hours before the midnight deadline, when funding for federal agencies was set to expire.
