  • The European Union said it will impose retaliatory tariffs worth $28 billion on U.S. industrial and agricultural goods, following the Trump Administration's decision to raise tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 25 percent. The EU tariffs will take effect on April 1 and be fully implemented by mid-month.

The European Union has initiated a €28 billion ($30 billion) trade retaliation against the United States in response to the Trump administration's steel and aluminum tariffs imposed in 2018. This move comes after the U.S. placed tariffs on EU steel and aluminum, citing national security concerns, which the EU contested at the World Trade Organization (WTO). The WTO ruled in favor of the EU, allowing them to impose retaliatory tariffs on American goods. The EU's countermeasures target a variety of U.S. products including Harley-Davidson motorcycles, bourbon whiskey, and power boats. This escalation in trade tensions highlights the ongoing friction between the U.S. and the EU, with the EU aiming to protect its industries and push for a resolution to the tariff dispute.
