  • Republican U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Mike Johnson aims to hold a vote on Tuesday on a bill to fund the government through September 30, a move needed to avert a partial shutdown of agencies late next week,

U.S. House Republicans are planning to vote on a temporary funding measure on Tuesday to prevent a government shutdown as the current fiscal year ends on September 30, 2023. This measure, proposed by Speaker Kevin McCarthy, would extend federal funding for 31 days at a reduced spending level, excluding aid to Ukraine but including an increase in federal disaster assistance by $16 billion. The bill faces opposition from both conservative Republicans, who demand deeper spending cuts, and Democrats, who are critical of the spending reductions and the exclusion of Ukraine aid. If passed, this continuing resolution would give Congress additional time to finalize the 12 appropriations bills needed for the full fiscal year 2024. However, its passage in the Senate, where Democrats hold the majority, remains uncertain.
