  • The British Columbia and federal governments have signed a four-year, $670-million pharmacare agreement, giving universal access to contraceptive and diabetes medications.

The British Columbia government has entered into a $670 million pharmacare agreement with the federal government, aimed at enhancing the province's universal public drug plan. This deal, part of a broader initiative to establish a national pharmacare program, will see B.C. receive $590 million over five years, with an additional $80 million for mental health and substance use services. The agreement focuses on improving access to prescription medications, particularly for conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and contraception, while also supporting the expansion of PharmaCare coverage. This funding will also help in reducing out-of-pocket costs for patients and is expected to benefit approximately 36,000 more people in B.C. by providing them with necessary medications. The agreement was signed by B.C. Health Minister Adrian Dix and federal Health Minister Mark Holland, marking a significant step towards a national pharmacare framework.
