Appeals court lifts blocks on Trump's orders restricting diversity, equity and inclusion programs

  • An appeals court Friday lifted a block on executive orders seeking to end government support for diversity, equity and inclusion programs, handing the Trump administration a win after a string of setbacks defending President Donald Trump's agenda against dozens of lawsuits.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit has lifted blocks on former President Donald Trump's executive orders that restrict diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training in federal agencies and contractors. These orders, issued in 2020, aimed to eliminate what Trump described as "divisive concepts" in workplace training, including ideas that could be interpreted as promoting racial or gender superiority or inferiority. The decision reverses a lower court's injunction, allowing the enforcement of these orders which had been challenged by the NAACP and other groups. The appeals court's ruling was based on the argument that the challengers did not have standing to sue, as they could not demonstrate direct harm from the orders. This ruling could potentially impact how DEI programs are conducted in federal workplaces and among federal contractors, potentially limiting discussions on race, gender, and other identity-related issues in training sessions.
