An appeals court has paused a ruling that blocked Trump from implementing a ban on DEI programs, giving the White House a win in its war against diversity.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit upheld a ban on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) training in government agencies, as initially implemented by former President Donald Trump. This decision reversed a lower court's ruling that had blocked the ban, arguing that such training could promote "divisive concepts" like critical race theory. The ban was part of an executive order Trump signed in 2020, which aimed to eliminate what he described as "race and sex stereotyping" in federal training programs. The court's decision was based on the grounds that the challengers, including the Black and Latino Leadership Action Coalition and the National Urban League, did not have standing to sue because they could not demonstrate direct harm from the ban. This ruling could potentially influence how DEI initiatives are approached in government settings moving forward.
