Portugal's parliament rejected a motion of confidence on November 15, 2023, leading to the collapse of the Socialist government led by Prime Minister António Costa. This political upheaval was triggered by a corruption investigation involving lithium and hydrogen projects, which implicated Costa's chief of staff, Vítor Escária, and others close to the administration. Although Costa himself was not formally accused, the scandal's proximity to his office prompted his resignation. The rejection of the confidence motion, with 116 votes against and 101 in favor, has set the stage for a potential early election, with President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa expected to dissolve parliament and call for new elections.
