  • In the wake of a devastating election defeat, it is imperative that liberals stop retreating into smugness and snobbery, and begin confronting the social realities that have alienated so many.

The article by Alexandre Lefebvre, titled "If liberals like hegemony, they should reject snobbery," discusses the inherent contradictions within liberal hegemony, particularly focusing on the tension between the liberal ideals of equality and the often elitist attitudes of its proponents. Lefebvre critiques the liberal establishment for its tendency towards snobbery, which he argues undermines the very principles of liberalism such as inclusivity and egalitarianism. He points out that while liberals advocate for a hegemonic position where liberal values dominate, this dominance is often expressed through cultural and intellectual elitism, which alienates those outside the liberal elite. Lefebvre suggests that for liberalism to truly reflect its values, liberals must embrace a more inclusive approach, rejecting snobbery to foster a broader, more democratic engagement with society. This would mean acknowledging and integrating diverse perspectives, thereby making liberal hegemony not just a matter of power but of genuine representation and respect for all.
