The meeting, which took place on March 10, 2018, involved discussions on the potential exemptions for Canada from these tariffs, but U.S. officials, including Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross, indicated that the tariffs would proceed as planned. The Canadian team expressed concerns about the impact on the integrated North American economy and the potential for retaliatory measures. Despite the tense atmosphere, both sides agreed to continue negotiations, with Canada pushing for a permanent exemption from the tariffs.
