Exclusive: Bangladesh halves power buying from India's Adani amid payment dispute
- Bangladesh has halved the power it buys from neighbouring India's Adani Power, citing lower winter demand, government officials told Reuters on Monday, amid disagreements over dues running into hundreds of millions of dollars.
Bangladesh has significantly reduced its electricity imports from India's Adani Power Ltd by half, following a dispute over capacity charges. The decision was made after Adani Power sought to recover $120 million in capacity charges for the period when the power plant was not operational, a claim Bangladesh has contested. The reduction in imports, effective from December 1, 2024, was confirmed by a senior official from the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB). This move comes amidst ongoing negotiations and reflects Bangladesh's strategy to manage its power supply amidst financial disagreements. The BPDB has also indicated that it might further decrease imports if the issue remains unresolved.
