The current head of the Department of Health will take over from Simon Case, who has been cabinet secretary since 2020 and is standing down due to ill health.

Sir Chris Wormald has been appointed as the new Cabinet Secretary and head of the Civil Service, replacing Simon Case who is stepping down due to a medical condition. Wormald, previously the permanent secretary at the Department of Health and Social Care, will take on this role temporarily while Case undergoes treatment. This transition comes at a critical time as the government prepares for the King's Speech and the Autumn Statement. Simon Case, who has been in the role since September 2020, will continue to support the Prime Minister and the Cabinet from home during his recovery. The change in leadership at the top of the Civil Service is seen as a move to ensure stability and continuity in government operations during this period.
