  • Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said it was time to act to combat an "epidemic" of suicide among former and current military personnel.

The Australian Defence Force (ADF) is set to undergo a significant overhaul of its policies regarding personnel with criminal convictions, particularly focusing on sex offenders. Under the new policy, individuals convicted of serious crimes, including sexual offenses, will be automatically discharged from the ADF. This change aims to enhance the safety and integrity of the military environment. The policy shift was influenced by a review led by former judge Margaret McMurdo, which highlighted the need for stricter guidelines on managing personnel with criminal records. The new rules will apply to both current members and new recruits, ensuring that those with convictions for offenses like sexual assault, domestic violence, or child sex offenses are not retained or enlisted. This initiative is part of broader cultural reforms within the ADF to address issues of misconduct and improve the organization's reputation and operational effectiveness.
