Free vaccine to protect Qld mums and kids from RSV
- Pregnant Queenslanders can now be vaccinated against a potentially deadly respiratory virus for free under a $13.5m state government program.
The Queensland government has announced a new initiative to provide free RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) vaccines to pregnant women and infants, aiming to protect vulnerable populations from the virus which can cause severe respiratory illness. This program, set to commence in the coming months, will offer the vaccine to all pregnant women in their third trimester and to infants under eight months during their first RSV season. The decision follows recommendations from the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) and is part of a broader effort to reduce hospitalisations and healthcare costs associated with RSV, which is particularly dangerous for young children and the elderly. The rollout is expected to significantly decrease the incidence of severe RSV infections, providing relief to families and the healthcare system.
