US sees surge in Indian immigrants at border with Canada
- The United States has seen a surge in attempts by Indian nationals to illegally cross the country's northern border with Canada in recent years, CBP data shows.
The U.S. has experienced a significant increase in Indian immigrants crossing the border from Canada, with over 30,000 encounters in the last year, marking a sharp rise from previous years. This surge is largely attributed to the perception that crossing into the U.S. from Canada is easier than from Mexico, coupled with the availability of student visas in Canada which some use as a pathway to eventually enter the U.S. illegally. Many of these immigrants are seeking asylum, often citing religious persecution in India, but the process has overwhelmed border facilities, leading to logistical and humanitarian challenges. The situation has also led to diplomatic tensions, with Canada expressing concerns over the increased border traffic. U.S. authorities are now considering measures to manage this influx, including potentially stricter visa regulations for students from India.
