Starting in May, state or local government buildings will be fined $500 a day for flying any flag other than the United States flag, the Utah state flag, military flags or a short list of others approved by lawmakers.

The article from NBC News discusses a new law in Utah, signed by Governor Spencer Cox, which prohibits the display of any flag representing a specific demographic group, including the Pride flag, in public schools and government buildings. This legislation, known as HB 261, aims to maintain neutrality in public spaces by only allowing the U.S. flag, the Utah state flag, and other official flags like the POW/MIA flag. The law has sparked controversy, with critics arguing it targets the visibility of the LGBTQ+ community, especially during a time when there's increased national attention on anti-LGBTQ+ legislation. Supporters of the bill, however, claim it promotes an environment free from political or social statements. The ban has led to concerns about the erasure of symbols of diversity and inclusion, with some educators and community members expressing disappointment over the potential chilling effect on discussions about diversity and acceptance in educational settings.
