Minnesota Democrats sue Republicans over 'improper and unlawful' session
- Minnesota legislative battle is kicking off in the courts. Minnesota House Democrats and Secretary of State Steve Simon filed lawsuits with the state Supreme Court challenging Republicans' move to convene and elect a speaker of the House on the first day of session Tuesday.
Minnesota Democrats have filed a lawsuit against Republican legislators, alleging that the GOP improperly and unlawfully ended a legislative session. The contention arose when Republican senators walked out of the Senate chamber, preventing a vote on a significant infrastructure borrowing bill. This walkout, according to the Democrats, violated the state's constitutional requirement for a continuous legislative session. The lawsuit claims that this action not only disrupted the legislative process but also infringed on the rights of Minnesotans to have their elected representatives fulfill their duties. The Democrats are seeking a court ruling to declare the session's end as unconstitutional and are asking for the Senate to be reconvened to complete its work.
