The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society is calling on the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal to force the federal government back to the negotiation table on First Nations child welfare reforms.

The First Nations Child and Family Caring Society is attempting to compel the Canadian government to return to negotiations regarding child welfare reform. This effort follows a significant 2016 Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling that found Canada's child welfare system discriminatory against First Nations children. Despite a $23.4-billion settlement in 2023 aimed at compensating affected children and families, and a commitment to reform, the Caring Society alleges that the government has not adequately followed through on promised reforms. They are particularly concerned about the lack of progress in implementing Jordan's Principle, which ensures First Nations children receive necessary public services without jurisdictional disputes. The Caring Society has filed a motion with the tribunal to enforce these reforms, highlighting ongoing issues like the need for better mental health support, educational services, and the prevention of family separations.
