Hundreds of thousands of people in Istanbul joined one of the biggest demonstrations in recent Turkish history on Saturday to protest against the government and the controversial imprisonment of deposed mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

The demonstration was spurred by Kilicdaroglu's conviction on charges of insulting public officials, which many see as politically motivated to sideline opposition ahead of the crucial vote. Demonstrators waved Turkish flags and banners, calling for justice and democracy, highlighting the deep political divide in the country as the election approaches.
