Thousands of anti-government protesters gathered in Istanbul to demonstrate against the arrest of Ekrem Imamoglu, the mayor of Istanbul, who was sentenced to over two years in prison and banned from politics for allegedly insulting election officials. The protests, which took place in the Sarachane district, saw demonstrators chanting slogans and waving flags, expressing their opposition to what they perceive as political persecution by the ruling AKP party. Imamoglu, a prominent figure in the opposition CHP party, has appealed the conviction, which stems from comments he made during the 2019 local elections.
