A proposed change to state law could add more consequences for those who make threats against certain institutions. Under current law, it is a crime to make violent threats against a specific person at a school or house of worship.

The California Senate Public Safety Committee has advanced Senate Bill 1178, known as the Safe Schools and Places of Worship Act, introduced by Senator Aisha Wahab. This bill aims to establish a 1,000-foot buffer zone around schools and places of worship where individuals with concealed carry permits are prohibited from carrying firearms. The legislation seeks to enhance safety in these sensitive locations by limiting gun access, following incidents like the Nashville school shooting. The bill has garnered support from various groups including Moms Demand Action and the California Teachers Association, but faces opposition from gun rights advocates like the Firearms Policy Coalition, who argue it infringes on Second Amendment rights. The bill's next step is a vote in the Senate Appropriations Committee.
