  • The Biden administration said Tuesday it has determined that Sudan's Rapid Support Force rebel group and proxies are committing genocide in the country's civil war and has imposed sanctions on the group's leaders.

The U.S. has officially declared that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan, along with allied militias, have committed genocide and crimes against humanity, particularly targeting the Masalit ethnic group in West Darfur. This declaration was accompanied by the imposition of sanctions on RSF leaders, including Abdelrahim Hamdan Dagalo, the brother of RSF commander Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo. The sanctions aim to address the severe human rights abuses, including mass killings, ethnic cleansing, and sexual violence, which have escalated since the conflict between the RSF and Sudan's army began in April 2023. The U.S. actions are part of a broader international response to the atrocities, with the U.N. Security Council also calling for an immediate cessation of hostilities and the protection of civilians.
