Immigration is a higher priority for Americans than it was a year ago, an AP-NORC poll shows
- More Americans say immigration should be a top focus for the U.S. government in 2025, as the country heads toward a new Republican administration in which President-elect Donald Trump has promised the mass deportations of migrants and an end to birthright citizenship.
According to a recent AP-NORC poll, immigration has surged as a top concern among Americans, now ranking as the third most pressing issue, just behind the economy and election integrity. This marks a significant shift from a year ago when immigration was not even among the top 10 issues. The poll indicates that 35% of Americans now view immigration as extremely important, a notable increase from previous sentiments. This heightened concern spans across political lines, with 55% of Republicans, 30% of Democrats, and 26% of independents considering it a critical issue. The poll also reflects a broader dissatisfaction with how immigration is being managed, with many Americans feeling that the current policies are inadequate. This shift in public opinion comes amidst ongoing debates and legislative actions concerning border security and immigration reform.
