U.S. declares genocide in Sudan, sanctions paramilitary leader
- Sudan's Rapid Support Forces has used systematic murder and sexual violence in its war in Sudan, the U.S. government says as it sanctions RSF's chief, Hemedti.
The U.S. has officially declared that the ongoing conflict in Sudan constitutes genocide, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken stating that both the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are committing war crimes. The U.S. has imposed sanctions on RSF leader Abdelrahim Hamdan Dagalo for his role in human rights abuses, including the killing of civilians, ethnic-based killings, and sexual violence. This declaration marks a significant escalation in U.S. policy towards the conflict, which has led to the displacement of over 8 million people and the deaths of thousands since it began in April 2023. The conflict has also seen widespread sexual violence, with reports of over 100 cases of rape and gang rape, primarily attributed to the RSF and allied militias. The U.S. aims to hold accountable those responsible for these atrocities, emphasizing the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
