Oil companies pay record $5.6M settlement after FTC alleges illegal coordination
- Three oil companies will pay a record penalty to settle allegations that they illegally coordinated before a merger between them was complete in 2021 and 2022, the federal government announced Tuesday.
Oil companies ExxonMobil, Chevron, Shell, and TotalEnergies have agreed to pay a record $5.6 million settlement following allegations by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) of illegal coordination in the bidding process for Gulf of Mexico oil leases. The FTC claimed that these companies improperly shared information about their bidding strategies, which could have led to higher prices for consumers due to reduced competition. This settlement marks the largest civil penalty in an FTC case involving oil and gas lease sales. The companies involved did not admit to any wrongdoing but agreed to the settlement to resolve the allegations. The FTC's action aims to prevent such anti-competitive practices in future lease sales, ensuring fair competition in the oil and gas industry.
