The Victorian government has decided to implement all 23 recommendations from a report aimed at tackling corruption within the construction industry, particularly focusing on the Construction, Forestry, Maritime, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU). The recommendations include the establishment of a new construction industry watchdog, the introduction of mandatory training for union officials, and the empowerment of the Victorian Building Authority to oversee union activities more stringently. Additionally, there will be increased penalties for illegal phoenixing, where companies are liquidated to avoid debts, and measures to prevent union officials from coercing workers into joining the union or engaging in unlawful industrial actions. The government's move aims to restore integrity and safety in the construction sector, which has been plagued by union-related misconduct.
