European Court Rules Against Greece in Landmark Immigration Case

The European Court of Human Rights ruled against Greece in a landmark immigration case involving a Syrian refugee, A.A., who was detained for over three years without a clear legal basis. The court found that Greece violated several articles of the European Convention on Human Rights, including the right to liberty and security, the right to a speedy judicial review of detention, and the prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment. A.A. was detained in substandard conditions, and his detention was extended multiple times without proper legal justification or review. The court awarded him 8,000 euros for non-pecuniary damage and 7,000 euros for costs and expenses, highlighting systemic issues in Greece's handling of asylum seekers and urging for reforms in its immigration detention practices.
